A West Virginia native, Pat Cross enrolled as the youngest student Hank Keiling's college level figure drawing class. Her appetite for learning and geographical curiosity lured her across country where she studied under masters Lance Hunter, Kim English and Bob Rhom. Her paintings and drawings have shown in over 200 fine art exhibitions including Realism New York, Bosque Art Classic, and Salon International. Publishers of her work include Cascades East, West Virginia Living, and International Artist magazine. Collectors of her work reside in Asia, Canada, Great Britain, New Zealand and the US. When she moved from the Pacific Northwest back to West Virginia to care for her parents she fell in love again with the Appalachian seasons. Here, she received art grants from the National Endowment for the Arts and the WVDACH to attend the National Portrait Society of America conference and, later to create a body of work showing people outdoors, which attracted rewarding portrait commissions.

Artistic Statement

While walking outdoors or indulging conversation with friends, I notice the most salient visual qualities, whether the zigzag path of a creek, brooding of storm clouds, perky posture of a bloom, or how the contours of a face round with a broad smile. Once I see it, I pine to capture that with line, brush stroke, shape, texture or color temperature.

When asked, "Which do you prefer most, the landscape or human form?" I reply, "Yes!" Though I paint and draw both separately, I grow giddy to combine the two, composing a person in an outdoor setting.
