I was born in South Charleston, WV at a very early age. In junior high art and music classes I developed a life long appreciation for the creative process. That was the end of my formal art training. After graduating from college as a somewhat indifferent scholar, my career of an engineering draftsman began. I've drawn in charcoal and ink from an early age. Stained glass was a media that I worked in for several years. However, I eventually became frustrated with it because my work seemed too derivative and not creative enough. And then sculpting discovered me.
Artistic Statement
My work consists mainly of sculptures. I refer to them as Sculptured Stories. Each works evolves from a story, saying or quote. Each is constructed of recycled parts as plumbing parts, old toys, doll parts or other discarded objects collected from flea markets, second hand stores or trash bins. I use welding, gluing, bolting and sometimes praying to hold the articles together. Some parts are sculpted from clay.
The subject matter usually deals with humorous or ironic situations with an occasional foray into seriousness. I view life in general with a humorous and ironic outlook. 'Situation hopeless but not serious' is my mantra and I try to instill that view in my art.
My artist goals are twofold. To satisfy my urge to create and to provide the viewer of my art with some insight into my world of humor and alternate reality.
